Two men with fridges strapped to their backs are in York. Here’s why

Two men each with a fridge on their back arrived in York today (Monday).

They stopped off outside the Minster as part of their epic journey from Teesside to Benidorm.

It’s all to raise awareness and get people talking about mental health.

This is about much more than the effort needed to walk 1,400 miles carrying a fridge. It’s about starting conversations and showing people they are not alone.

They are also raising vital funds so First Contact UK Mental Health can continue offering suicide prevention, early intervention and community-based mental health support.

Every pound raised will help reach more people who are struggling in silence — offering them hope, support and a safe place to talk.

Tom Judge and Kev Wilcox have already been causing a stir while training in north-east England for their walk from Middlesbrough to Benidorm in Spain. Today they did the same in York and North Yorkshire.

They set off on Saturday (30 August) and arrived at York Minster today.

Tom told YorkMix that the fridge symbolised the weight and struggle that people suffering with mental health issues endured every day. He also said doing something unusual helped get people talking.

Kev met up with Tom while out walking and they quickly formed a close friendship through their shared struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

They said they had really appreciated the many blasts on horns that they got while walking, even though, joked Tom, when it was a huge truck with a very loud one, it did make them jump.

Now that isn’t easy with a fridge on your back and a history of PTSD, he added!
