Trouble caused by youths has plummeted in Acomb, police say

Anti-social behaviour by young people in Acomb has dropped by more than 70%, police say.

It follows an operation launched to tackle “completely unacceptable” rise in trouble that had been plaguing the York suburb at the back end of last year.

Operation Harmony saw officers arrest and charge a number of youths with offences ranging from criminal damage to shop thefts, public order and assaults.

Youths were dispersed from areas of Acomb pre-emptively or in response to reported incidents, police said.

Those identified as being responsible for anti-social behaviour (ASB) were visited by police. They were then “subject to our ASB process, which focuses on diversionary initiatives and has led to a reduction in repeat perpetrators of ASB.

“Our teams have engaged with over 30 youths since December,” North Yorkshire Police said.

The operation has reduced youth-related ASB in the area by 72%, they added.

Acting Police Sergeant Ben Ambler said “This significant reduction shows the effectiveness of problem-solving policing.

“We recognise the impact that these types of issues have on businesses and residents and hope that this demonstrates our commitment to reducing ASB and crime and in keeping our communities safe and feeling safe.”
