Summer has arrived early at Theatre@41 – as they announce a new season filled with musical fun, cracking comedy, exciting screenings, and more.

The next three months will see performances from York’s thriving community theatre scene – kicking off this week with Neon Crypt’s comedy caper The Hound of the Baskervilles (5-9 May).

Contemporary musical theatre offerings include coming-of-age rock musical Spring Awakening (Inspired By Theatre, 20-23 May) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (York Light Opera Company, 24 June – 4 July), a comedy musical with audience participation.

While classic theatre offerings include The Great Gatsby (Pop Yer Clogs Theatre, 14-16 May) and Educating Rita (Black Treacle Theatre, 9-13 June), alongside brand new work by Black Sheep Theatre, who return to Theatre@41 with gothic romance, Love At First Bite (4-6 June).

Between 13-26 July, the theatre will tempt audiences with a taste of brand new comedy and theatre shows before they head north for the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Theatre@41’s Halfway to Edinburgh promises to be one of the country’s top Edinburgh Festival preview events; the full programme will be released soon, but has already confirmed cult comic Andrew O’Neill with their new show, Escape.

Halfway to Edinburgh will also see the homecoming of SELENE, Theatre@41’s first co-production.

This new piece by Wright&Grainger has enjoyed both critical and audience acclaim while on tour in Australia, winning a Best of Theatre award at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, and will perform at Theatre@41 on 15 and 16 July.

Also on 16 July, audiences can see early work-in-progress from local writers and theatre-makers at Test Drive Scratch Night.

Fans of the hit global TV series The Traitors will be right at home with interactive round-table experience, Night of the Werewolves LIVE (10 July), by multi-award winning Yorkshire based company, Silent Uproar.

Three screenings of National Theatre Live productions have also been scheduled in this summer season: The Audience (10 May), The Playboy of the Western World (11 July) and All My Sons (14 June).

Tom Bellerby, theatre director at Theatre@41, said: “Our summer season features the usual dynamic mix of programming to cater for our ever growing audience.

“Supporting work made by some of Yorkshire’s most exciting theatre makers is a key part of our mission and we’re delighted to have programmed work from multiple local artists this summer.

“Final planning is underway for our Halfway to Edinburgh festival, which will offer York audiences the first chance to see the best new work heading to the Fringe this year – we can’t wait to share the full programme soon.”
