Two men and teenager under arrest after a raid on a gym in York

It follows a report Police received at around 7.15pm last night, from a gym in York, which reported that several lockers in the male changing room had been broken into and cash stolen.

A man, believed to have arrived in an Audi A6 S Line, had been seen acting suspiciously in the changing rooms but had left before officers arrived, leaving the Audi in the carpark.

Police have not identified the gym involved.

A couple of hours later, officers spotted the Audi again, travelling in convoy with a silver BMW 3 Series.

After briefly losing sight of the vehicles, officers found the Audi parked up in the Park and Ride car park.

With help from City of York CCTV operators, two males were seen leaving the Audi and heading towards Hull Road.

Meanwhile, officers located the BMW on the A64 and brought the vehicle to a safe stop by boxing it in.

As they moved in, the driver tried to escape, reversing into a police vehicle before running off across a grass bank, but he didn’t get far and was quickly detained. A 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving, as well as driving without a licence or insurance.

Shortly after, two more males matching the CCTV descriptions were stopped on Hull Road, one found with keys to an Audi. A 35-year-old man, and a 15-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of burglary. All three remain in custody while our investigation continues.

Police said: “A great example of sharp-eyed members of the public and City of York CCTV colleagues, and vigilant officers, working together to tackle crime.”
