The Amber heat alerts that affect North Yorkshire this week

The Met Office has updated its AMBER heat alert for Monday through to Friday again.

A RED warning will come into force in the area from London, Bristol and Birmingham on Wednesday, currently much of England south of the Humber is covered by an Amber alert.

By Wednesday the Amber alert will reach as far north as Selby and Sherburn-in-Elmet. That Met Office alert does not cover the rest of North Yorkshire and the city of York but that could change.

Meanwhile, the UK’s agency for public health has upgraded its own alerts.

An Amber one, aimed at “health and social care professionals, covers the whole of Northern England, including North and East Yorkshire, this week.

The Weather health alerting system is provided by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) in partnership with the Met Office. It’s intended to provide early warning to the health and social care sector, the responder community, the voluntary and community sector and government departments when adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of the population.

Currently temperatures are expected to get as high as 36c in Selby, 34 in York, by Thursday.

Central London is expected to record around 39c.

When the Met Office issues heat alerts it says: “More people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents.

“Adverse health effects are likely to be experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat.

“The wider population is likely to experience some issues including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue).

“Some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible, with potential for welfare issues for those who experience prolonged delays.”
