Temperatures plummet to -9°C in York – 45 schools closed in North Yorkshire

Temperatures fell to a low of -9.2°C in York today (Tuesday).

According to the York weather station based at Strensall it hit that low between 5.30am and 6.06am.

It makes it the coldest night of the freeze so far. However, there has been no snow in the city.

A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place for York and much of North Yorkshire until 11am.

The conditions mean a number of schools are closed in North Yorkshire today. They are:

  • Springhead School (both Sites)
  • Northstead
  • Hawsker and Fylingdales School
  • St Augustine’s School Scarborough
  • St Peter’s School Scarborough
  • St George’s School Scarborough
  • Lothersdale Primary School

That’s in addition to Millthorpe School in York which is closed due to no water supply.

City of York Council says: “Our fleet of gritters and mini tractors will be out treating and gritting around 360 miles of roads, footpaths and cycle paths in York this week.”

Temperatures in the city are due to rise to a high of 4°C today, with the possibility of wintry showers this afternoon.

Forecasters are not expecting temperatures to fall below 0°C for the rest of the week.
