‘Spontaneous combustion’ blamed for large North Yorkshire fire

Firefighters tackled a large fire in the open last night (Sunday).

They were called out to a field off Sherburn Road, Selby, at 8.43pm to find about 180 straw bales well alight.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews used hosereels to protect the surrounding area and keep the fire under control through the night.

“The cause is believed to be due to spontaneous combustion.”
