Updated: Suspected hand grenade found in Selby woods made safe and cordon lifted

A suspected hand grenade found in Brayton Barff woods in Selby has been made safe.

After the discovery of the grenade by a member of the public at 10am today (Tuesday), North Yorkshire Police put a cordon in place at the woodland.

Ministry of Defence ordnance experts were brought in, and people were advised to avoid the area.

At 4.45pm, police reported that: “The item was located and found to be empty and has since been made safe.

“Thank you to local residents for their patience while this incident was dealt with.”

The cordon has now been lifted

The Barff is a covered reservoir owned by Yorkshire Water and one of the few high spots in a flat landscape. The woods is a popular area for families and dog walkers.
