A vital lifeline for disabled adults in Ryedale is under threat of closure by North Yorkshire Council.
Families say losing the Cauwood Day Centre in Malton would have a devastating and catastrophic impact, and many users and relatives are already experiencing profound distress at the prospect.
A cross-party effort, supported by councillors from different parties and Kevin Hollinrake MP, is now under way to make the council think again and postpone the decision.

Cllr Keane Duncan told YorkMix Radio: “To close this centre without any consultation, giving our most vulnerable just a few days notice of the decision, is a shameful approach.
“It’s happening so fast, and it’s been a massive shock, adding anxiety and distress for families. The users are severely disabled. They can’t speak to the press, but we’re determined to ensure their voice is heard.
“We’re calling on the (North Yorkshire Council) leader and his cabinet to pause, consider the cross party outrage there’s been, and to treat the users and their families with the dignity and fairness they rightly deserve.
“Please postpone this decision” He said.
Members of North Yorkshire Council’s executive committee will get an update on plans to develop an extra care scheme in Old Malton Road, Malton, tomorrow (Tuesday 21 April).
A former old people’s home and the Cauwood Day Service currently occupy the site.
Council officers have recommended that the day centre be closed to make way for the new development, with its services offered elsewhere in Ryedale.
The centre currently supports seven people, who have either a learning disability and/or autism, or other physical and sensory needs.
Users are supported with activities such as arts and crafts and have access to a sensory room.
A report for councillors notes that there has been limited demand for the service over the past five years, with only two new people using the service since 2020.
Officers say the property is outdated, in an isolated location, has high maintenance costs and staffing issues.
