A senior police officer has paid tribute to Rosie Prior, who died a year ago today.
PC Prior was killed in a crash while off duty and after stopping to help another driver on the A19 at Bagby near Thirsk on 11 January 2025.
Ryan Welford, 41, from Knaresborough, also died at the scene.
Today, North Yorkshire Police Deputy Chief Constable Scott Bisset placed flowers in the force memorial garden as part of a short service.
He said: “Rosie was the very best of policing, putting the safety of others before her own in order to help people.”
Rosie, who was 45, joined North Yorkshire Police as a student officer in May 2022 before being posted to Athena House in York.

After a year she moved across to Acomb where she became an integral part of the Band 1 Response team.
Rosie died after pulling over to help people involved in a collision between an Audi and Ford Focus.
As she was doing so, she and Ryan were hit by a lorry.
Her funeral was held at York Minster. Following Rosie’s death, police unveiled a plaque to Rosie in its memorial garden and has dedicated our conference facility at the Police Headquarters in Northallerton in her memory.
North Yorkshire Police posted today: “Our thoughts remain with Rosie’s family, friends and colleagues.
“We will always remember her.”
