Road closed and cars stranded as snow brings ‘treacherous’ conditions to North Yorkshire

Police have urged people to avoid travelling on the North York Moors as snow has made travelling ‘treacherous’ tonight (Friday).

Officers are dealing with reports of vehicles stuck due to snow and ice north of Pickering.

In a post tonight, the force said: “Conditions on the roads around Goathland are extremely difficult. In particular, Wheeldale Road is impassable, and now closed.

“Our officers are attending the location in police 4×4 vehicles, and working hard to ensure everyone is safe.

“Please avoid this area. The conditions are treacherous, and bear in mind that mobile phone coverage may be poor.

“If you’re travelling in the North York Moors area tonight, consider finding alternative routes, or postponing your journey. Thank you for your assistance.”

A yellow weather warning for snow remains in force in the area all through tomorrow (Saturday).

And a cold weather alert is in force across Yorkshire as temperatures drop to -4°C this weekend.
