Rich list reveals the wealthiest people in North Yorkshire

The richest people in Yorkshire have been revealed.

Today an updated version of The Sunday Times Rich List has been published, and there are a fair few loaded folk from our neck of the woods.

The 38th edition of the rankings show the UK’s 350 most affluent individuals and families share combined wealth of £784 billion – a 1.4 per cent rise on last year and a sum equivalent to a quarter of UK GDP.

Around here, the York-based Shepherd family have had a steady year. They are found at number 121 in the list – or at number two in the Northern rich list – with an unchanged fortune of £1.35bn.

In June 2024, Shepherd Group sold Portakabin to France’s Antin Infrastructure Partners for over £1.5bn.

The Sir Ken Morrison family have seen their wealth drop by a single £1m to £921m. Although Morrison supermarket founder Sir Ken is from Bradford, his children have companies themselves, including the Murton Grange holiday lets business near York.

Malcolm Healey, the entrepreneur behind Wren Kitchens among other companies, is at number 176 with £901m.

Now living in the US, he has kept hold of Warter Priory, his 12,000-acre estate at Pocklington famous for its shooting drives.

Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty, the Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton and former Prime Minister and his wife, are worth £563m.

The Sunday Times says: “Sunak rejoined Goldman Sachs last July on an annual salary of more than £1 million – and pledged to donate the money to the maths charity he founded with his wife, Akshata. She has a £403.1 million stake in the IT firm founded by her father.”
