Restaurant of the Week: Ate O'Clock, York
Hidden behind a charming fairy-lit alleyway in the heart of York, Ate O'Clock is one of those restaurants that never seems to lose its magic. Whether you're visiting for a family meal, a special celebration or simply an excuse to treat yourself, this city centre favourite delivers every time.
Step through the twinkling entrance and you'll discover a spacious yet welcoming dining room, beautifully decorated with floral touches and an atmosphere that feels both relaxed and special. It's the kind of place where you can comfortably settle in for the evening and lose track of time.

Of course, the real reason people keep coming back is the food.
On our latest visit, the blade of beef was an absolute triumph. Slow-cooked to perfection, it was so tender it barely needed a knife, falling apart with every forkful. Rich, comforting and packed with flavour, it's exactly the sort of dish that leaves you wondering why you don't order it every time.

The chicken burger was equally impressive and, quite simply, bursting with flavour. Loaded with extra pulled chicken and smothered in burger sauce, every bite delivered the perfect combination of juicy, smoky and indulgent goodness. It wasn't just a burger... it was the sort of burger that has you planning your next visit before you've even finished the first one.

Seafood lovers are particularly spoilt for choice here, with an extensive selection of beautifully presented dishes showcasing fresh ingredients and bold flavours. Whatever your preference, the menu offers plenty to tempt you.
And then there's dessert.
The sticky toffee pudding deserves a mention all of its own. Warm, rich and gloriously indulgent, served with a generous scoop of ice cream, it's comfort food at its finest and the perfect way to round off a meal.
The drinks menu is equally impressive, offering everything from cocktails, wines and beers to a fantastic range of alcohol-free options. Their set menu also represents excellent value, £25 for 2 courses and £29.50 for 3, giving diners plenty of choice without breaking the bank.

As a three-time winner of the YorkMix Choice Awards for Best Restaurant, it's easy to see why Ate O'Clock remains such a popular destination for both locals and visitors. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners are all well catered for, making it an easy choice for groups with different tastes and dietary requirements.

Over the years, I've celebrated birthdays here, enjoyed countless family meals and even attended our staff Christmas party at Ate O'Clock. The one thing that's remained consistent throughout every visit is the quality. Great food, welcoming service and an atmosphere that always feels just right.
In a city packed with fantastic places to eat, Ate O'Clock continues to earn its place among York's favourites. Sometimes a restaurant becomes popular because of a trend. Ate O'Clock has remained popular because it consistently gets the important things right... Great food, genuine hospitality and the welcoming atmosphere you'd expect from a proud independent, family-run business.
And if you're still wondering what to order... trust me, the beef is calling you.
As standard, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available.
