Yorkshire Water has been called in to deal with a leak of raw sewage on Gale Lane in Acomb.
These pictures have been taken by City of York councillor Andrew Waller.
He said the area affected was between the shops and Lowfield Drive.
He added people should be careful as the surface is slippery and the footpath has been coated with the contents of the sewer.
