Police have issued a warning as wintry weather is set to make driving difficut in areas of North Yorkshire.
The amber weather warning for snow, which we reported yesterday, could bring as much as 15 to 25cm over the North York Moors on Thursday, the Met Office says.
There will be wintry showers today with more serious snowfall north and east of York on Thursday.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Forecasters say ‘significant accumulations’ of snow are possible over the North York Moors and parts of the Yorkshire Wolds – potentially as much as 15 to 25cm – resulting in an Amber warning which will be in force for much of Thursday.
“This could mean:
- Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers.
- Bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times possible.
- Some rural communities could become cut off.”

“You can help us: please monitor the forecast and local traffic news, check your vehicle before you set off, and drive according to the conditions at all times.”
Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Cold Arctic air from the north is firmly in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing the first notable cold snap of this autumn and giving an early taste of winter weather.
“Whilst not all places will see lying snow, where showers are most frequent accumulations of 2-5cm will be possible.
“On higher ground in Scotland 15-20cm could accumulate and potentially as much as 15-25cm over the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds.”
