Police praise ‘courageous’ young heroes who stopped York blaze from spreading

Two young heroes who stopped a York blaze from spreading have been praised by police.

The flames in a field in Askham Lane last Sunday (12 July) threatened to get totally out of control and head towards a neighbouring housing estate.

Then farm workers Jay Loft, 22, and Cameron Bartram, 19, got a call from the owner of the field, Russell Wagstaff.

The pair had been working nearby. They jumped into tractors and headed to the field.

Putting themselves and their vehicles at risk, they drove alongside the fire, cutting back the wheat to create the fire break.

This contained the blaze helping fire crews who spent hours on site putting it out.

Sgt Ben Amble today congratulated the work of Jay and Cameron. He said: “I want to recognise Jay and Cameron, who acted quickly and courageously before the arrival of the fire service by creating a firebreak that helped prevent the fire from spreading further.

“Their actions undoubtedly assisted in limiting the damage caused, and it is pleasing to see them receiving the recognition they deserve for their efforts.”

North Yorkshire Police has been working alongside North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and other partners in tackling suspected deliberate fires across the city as part of a joint plan, Operation Firesafe.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service recently highlighted the work it was doing, saying that in the last six months crews have attended over one hundred fires that are believed to be deliberate around the city. Areas include Tang Hall, The Clifton Backies and St Nicks Nature Reserve and Environment Centre.
