The road has now reopened to traffic.

Police were seen speaking to a group of people on the walkway next to the former Rio steak restaurant.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a man in distress on Bridge Street, York, at 4.35pm today.

“The road was closed for a short time to enable police to resolve the incident safely. Officers are now arranging for him to get the support he needs.”
