Updated: Police called to submerged boat in York

Emergency services were dealing with an incident in the river in York today (Thursday).

Police, fire crews and the York Rescue Boat volunteers went to the Foss Basin at about 9.30am.

A boat had sunk under the water. It was confirmed that no one was on board with the help of the police underwater search team.

A fire engine, police cars and the rescue boat van were parked near the entrance to St George’s Field car park as the operation went on.

The boat, the Tony Rose, was almost completely submerged, with only the bow out of the River Foss.

Crews hooked out belongings from inside the vessel, including a fridge and a guitar.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers attended an incident at Foss Basin in York alongside City of York Council, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, the Environment Agency, and York Rescue following a report that a boat had sunk.

“The report was received at approximately 8.40am today (Thursday).

“Following enquiries, including a search by the Police Underwater Search Team, it has been confirmed that no one was on board, there is no evidence of any suspicious circumstances, and arrangements are being made for the boat to be removed.”

The incident has now been stood down.
