Updated: This is why police were searching a rooftop near York Minster

Police initiated a rooftop search near York Minster late last night.

And as part of the investigation, they called in North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service at 10.50pm last night (Wednesday).

Officers were trying to locate a thief.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “This was a search for a suspected cycle thief who ran off from police officers in the area.

“A search was carried out of buildings and gardens in the St Leonards / Duncombe Place areas and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service assisted with their equipment as officers believed the suspect had climbed onto the roof of a building.

“However, the suspect was not located.”

North Yorkshire Fire Service said a crew from Huntington, and the aerial ladder platform, were sent to help search the roof of a commercial property.

The fire crews also used lighting and a thermal imaging camera.
