Petition for York City bus parade tops 2,000 signatures

A petition calling for a York City open-top bus parade has already gathered more than 2,000 signatures.

It was set up after news broke that the club had failed to gain permission from City of York Council and North Yorkshire Police for a parade after the team’s promotion heroics.

Fans from teams across the country are supporting the petition.

It’s been started by Seth Sowerby, chair of York City Supporters’ Trust. Titled Let York City Have Their Bus Parade — They’ve Earned It, you can see it here.

Seth writes: “On Saturday 26 April 2026, York City Football Club did something extraordinary.

“In the 103rd minute of the final game of the season, Josh Stones scored to clinch the National League title and seal promotion back to the English Football League after a decade in non-league football.

“It was, by any measure, one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of English football.

“Let our City celebrate.”

It calls on the council and police to “reverse their decision and grant permission for an open-top bus parade through York city centre to celebrate York City FC’s National League title and promotion to League Two.”

The petition also asks them to “work with the football club to agree a safe and appropriate route and date, with proper planning and police support – as councils and police forces do in towns and cities across the country every single season.”

At the time of publication, it has 2,078 signatures.

Messages left by those signing the petition include:

  • No set of players deserves a bus parade more than these lads, don’t take that from them!
  • A moment in the waiting for 10 years, and in the most dramatic fashion. Needs celebrating right
  • Let York come together and celebrate the amazing achievements of YCFC. Why deny this to the citizens of York.
