Can a 90s playlist change a child’s future? That’s the aim of this special charity cruise night in York.
The Future of Taru charity are holding a fundraiser cruise aboard the River Palace, one of City Cruises’ fleet of party boats, on Friday 10 April.
The event will see DJs taking you back to the 90s, with 3 hours of Britpop, Indie, Pop-Punk, and no doubt a few guilty pleasures thrown in for good measure.
All of the money raised will be paying the 2026 annual school fees for 10 pupils at the Future of Taru school in Kenya.
DJs on the night will be Simon Taylor, who DJ’d across York in the 90s and 00s aboard City Cruises’ fleet for hundreds of Private events and Party Night cruises, and is the owner of Taylor’s of Acomb, along with being the curator of Thorn Waterside Music Festival.
Joining Simon will be Future of Taru trustee and event organiser Mark Mattinson.
The Future of Taru charity was started around 10 years ago by Paul Moffatt from Carlisle and his wife Eunice who is from Kenya. They began by building a primary school which opened with around 20 children under 10 years ago.
The charity has grown significantly in recent years, and now includes a Secondary school, and across the 2 schools there are around 460 pupils, around 225 of whom are sponsored.
Paul says “All of our children are living in poverty. As well as providing protection from the dangers of the streets, our Charity ensures local children receive a quality education and food every day in a happy and open environment, transforming their lives and giving them hope for a better future while supporting their families to make life progress.
“Together with the fantastic backing of a growing number of sponsors and supporters, and with the skills and enthusiasm of our dedicated Board of volunteer Trustees, we work together to govern and develop the charity to ensure the work we do and the goals of the organisation are in line with our vision, mission and values.
“In supporting Future of Taru, you are helping to make a difference to the lives of Kenyan children living in poverty.”
The charity has been well supported by the people of York over the years, with trustee Mark and his friends completing five Coast to Coast cycle rides along with previous fundraising gigs and events raising nearly £20,000 so far.
And the school’s sports teams even wear an old York City FC Foundation kit as their sports kit as well which was donated to them in early 2020.
Their goal with this latest event is simple: use the power of 90s nostalgia to fund the education of 10 pupils at their school in Kenya. Join them for an evening of dancing, nostalgia, and meaningful impact.
Tickets are on sale now, priced at £15 per person, and the Future of Taru would love to see you there and party like its 1995!
