Police have expressed their disappointment after anti-social behaviour left a North Yorkshire beach in a mess.
They were commenting after responding to reports of trouble at Tate Hill Beach, Whitby.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, the area had been left in a mess — with glass bottles, drink cans, broken glass and other litter scattered across the sand.”
Those who were still there were persuaded to join a litter pick, filling five rubbish bags.
“While those young people spoken with at scene did the right thing by staying to help, it’s disappointing that many others were not phased by the mess they made or the impact this can have on our community,”. the spokesperson said.
“Not only does this give a sorry impression to our tourist economy – on which many in Whitby rely – but litter such as glass bottles and broken glass causes a hazard to many other beach users, including our dogs and children.

“Our beaches are a huge asset to our community, and we should all take pride in keeping them safe, clean and enjoyable for everyone.
“Unfortunately, we’re aware of increasing concerns about ASB in this area.
“We encourage residents to continue reporting concerns while we continue liaising with our partners about the matter. We also ask residents and tourists to be mindful of any glass in the area going forwards.”
