New signs to boost the profile of a unique but hidden York theatre

A theatre in York, described as a little gem, is getting a boost with new signage.

Theatre@41 is tucked away down an alley off Monkgate and many local people have no idea it’s there.

Theatre@41 is an independent theatre, dedicated to supporting participation in the performing arts by providing affordable, accessible space and support for community performances and classes.

It hosts an outstanding range of unique and theatre, music and comedy that you won’t see anywhere else in York.

Soon it will have a new sign on the main road which Alan Park, chair of the charity that runs it, hopes will make a big difference.

In an interview for David Dunning’s Sunday Late Show on YorkMix Radio, which you can hear on this link, Alan said:

“A lot of people go past and don’t really know that we’re there, there’s a red door down an alleyway, and there’s a couple of signs up, but it’s quite far down, we’re quite set back.

“So getting a sign right at the front that says that there’s a theatre there, that there is something exciting happening down that alleyway does kind of lure people into an amazing space.

“But it’s taken us a while to get to the point where we can have a sign down there (on Monkgate) and we’re really excited about it being installed in the next couple of months.

“I think as much as we invest in social media and emails and a website, just seeing a place as you walk around, and seeing that there’s a theatre there is important.

“A lot of our audience come to us by foot. They come from the Groves, they walk to us from just outside the city walls. So that sign kind of beckons people in, I think it will absolutely help us in kind of cementing our place in York’s cultural scene.”
