‘Fantastic news!’ New Post Office to open in Haxby

Next month sees the return of a permanent Post Office service in Haxby, with the new branch due to open on Monday 30 March 2026 at 1pm.

It will be at the former Dutch Nurseries store on The Village with the existing one at Oaken Grove closing on the same day.

A statement on the Post Office’s website reads:

“Whilst the decision has already been made to reopen this branch, we would still like your views on access at the new location. We welcome feedback that can help inform our plans.”

The York Outer Labour MP, Luke Charters described it as “fantastic news”. He said:

“This is a promise I was determined to keep, and one that I am delighted has now come to fruition.

“I am incredibly grateful to every constituent who fed back to the Post Office about the vital need for a permanent site and it is clear that your voices have been heard.

“As I have said before, I continued pressing the case at every level in meetings with Post Office executives, Government Ministers, LINK and others to restore a permanent service for Haxby. It appears that all that hard work was worth it.

“This has, of course, been a team effort. I want to pay special tribute to Haxby Town Council, who have worked closely with me over the past year to make this happen. Without their support, securing a temporary home at Oaken Grove Community Centre after the previous branch closed, just under ten months ago, would have been far more difficult.”

Since the threat to the local post office first emerged, Lib Dem councillors too have worked to protect this vital service for residents.

They fought for a delay to the closure to allow alternatives to be explored and launched a petition opposing the move, which was backed by more than 2,000 local residents.

Councillor Andrew Hollyer said: “We have always been clear that the new post office should be located on The Village, which is the most accessible location for residents and offers significant parking compared to other options in our community.

“While this has not been straightforward, we are pleased that a permanent solution has now been secured. We would encourage all residents to fill out the Post Office’s consultation on access to the new site.”

Councillor Ian Cuthbertson added: “We would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign for a new post office for Haxby and Wigginton, particularly the thousands of residents who signed the petition.

“We would also like to thank Oaken Grove Community Centre for hosting the temporary post office, and Haxby Town Council for backing our call to fund it.”

Councillor Richard Watson said: “We are aware that the location on The Village has some parking pressures, and that a bottleneck can form near the pharmacy at busy times. We will continue to work with the Post Office and the Council to make sure access for all residents, including those on foot or with mobility issues, is as safe and convenient as possible.”
