368 residents have backed a petition calling on Post Office Ltd to retain counter services in Woodthorpe in York.
There is also news of a possible new retailer for the site which could help with moves to save the post office.
The petition was launched by local Liberal Democrat councillors after it was announced that the Morrisons Daily store on Moorcroft Road, which hosts a Post Office counter, was to close.
The closure date has been confirmed as 1st August.
Morrisons said: “Following a detailed review, the store is being proposed for closure.
“For context, the store was part of Morrisons acquisition of McColl’s in 2022 and has been loss-making for a sustained period despite concerted effort and investment to improve performance.
“Rising operating costs in recent years have made it even more difficult to return the store to profitability and we see no viable pathway to achieve this.”
Post Office Ltd stated: “The provision of a Post Office service to our customers in the local community is important to us, and we will continue to work hard to restore services in the area.
“We are currently investigating the options available.”
The Lib Dem petition – which calls on Post Office Ltd to take urgent action to ensure services remain available for the residents of Woodthorpe – has been signed by 368 residents and reflects concerns that many residents face being cut off from access to vital services.
Cllr Stephen Fenton said: “I’d like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign to save Post Office services which are relied on by many Woodthorpe residents.
“I met with Post Office representatives last month and have contacted local retailers in the hope that the store – and its Post Office counter – can be saved.
“There are hopeful signs that an announcement may be imminent that a new retailer has agreed to take on the lease for the store and maintain Post Office services.
“That’s welcome news and I stand ready to work with the new operator.”
