National band championships to be held in York for the first time

More than 70 of the country’s finest brass bands will gather in York for the first time for a prestigious competition.

The National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain brings together leading ensembles from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for the country’s principal national brass band competition.

And it’s being held at York Barbican for the first time, on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026.

Taking place over the two days will be the Sections 1–4 National Finals. Yorkshire bands including York Railway Institute Band, Wetherby Silver Band and Swinton & District Excelsior Band have all qualified to compete for National honours.

According to their website, “the Championships represent the highest level of competitive brass band performance in Great Britain and have been held in their current format since 1945.”

A spokesperson for the Championships said: “York Barbican provides an outstanding stage for one of the biggest weekends in the brass band calendar.

“Audiences can expect incredible live music, thrilling competition and a fantastic atmosphere throughout the weekend.”

Tickets are available only from over the counter on the event days at York Barbican, priced at adult £24, concessions (student/60+) £16, and children (11–17) £8.
