Mystery surrounds future of York store after plan lodged

Mystery surrounds the future of a York shop after plans were lodged for the building.

The plans would see the building that is home to the Size? footwear and clothes shop in St Sampson’s Square converted into a Joe & The Juice drinks, coffee and sandwich seller.

But JD Group, which owns the Size? brand, declined to tell the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) what it meant for the future of the store.

It comes after Danish company Joe & The Juice lodged plans for the site, on the corner of St Sampson’s Square and Feasegate, in early July.

The conversion would see the building converted to house the venue which would be able to seat 65 people, 29 on the ground floor and 36 on the first.

The juice seller’s plans stated their conversion would preserve the building’s historic character while also making the interior clearer and more refined.

Joe & The Juice was founded in Copenhagen in 2002 and now has more 500 stores across Europe, the United States, Middle East, Africa and Asia.

It is known for its freshly-prepared juices, shakes, coffee and sandwiches, according to its website.

Size? moved into the St Sampson’s Square store after its plans to convert the building were approved in 2018.

The unit was previously home to the Cloggs shoe shop and Barratts footwear store before that.

Size? launched in 2000 and grew from stores in Manchester, London and Brighton to more than 30 locations across the UK, Europe and North America.

It was set up by JD Group to test product collections in house before rolling them out across its other brands.

JD Group’s website stated: “Established in 2000, Size? specialises in supplying the finest products from the best brands in footwear, apparel and accessories.

“Initially set up to trial edgier product collections before introducing them to the mass market through the JD fascia, the Size? offer has since grown to include its own roster of highly sought-after worldwide exclusive product releases.

“Outside of the UK, Size? has stores in Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.”

The Group stated in its yearly results for 2025/6 it was converting its Finish Line estate to JD branding.

It has also decided to shut its remaining Hip stores and move the brand to online-only trading.

The Hip stores being closed are in Leeds and Manchester.

There is no reference to changes to Size? in the company’s reports on its performance and plans.

Its results for 2025/6 lists Size? as one of its brands but does not elaborate further.

Group Chief Executive Régis Schultz said in a report on the results that sales across the company grew by 2.1 per cent in 2025/6 despite tough market conditions.

The company’s boss added their deep understanding of their customers and lifestyle trends gave them a clear understanding of how they wanted to shop and spend.
