A shop which has been serving up fish and chips in York for 41 years has closed.
Jim Collis Fish & Chips, in Saxon Place, Heworth, shut on Saturday.
It’s so the owner Linda Collis can retire.
The chippy opened in 1985 and was named after Linda’s husband Jim, well-known on York’s sporting scene. Jim died in 2024
It’s always had a reputation of serving up quality fish and chips at very good prices.
Linda announced the closure of the shop on the business Facebook page. “After 41 years Linda has decided to retire, and doors will be closing.

“It was not an easy decision to make and she will miss all of our customers, many of which have become friends over the years.”
The shop was deluged with people on Saturday anxious to get their last taste of Jim Collis Fish & Chips.
On Saturday, Linda posted: “We are overwhelmed with how many people turned up this weekend for their last orders. We never expected to sell out! Thank you again.”
Many regulars posted about the milestone. “All the best Linda, enjoy your retirement will miss your fabulous fish and chips,” one said.
And another wrote: “Best wishes, will miss the best fish and chips around though.”
As we reported last September, plans are in to turn the building into two flats.
There would also be a new two-storey building constructed at the site, housing two more flats.
Plans say: “This proposal follows successful precedents in the immediate vicinity, where commercial premises have been converted to residential flats in recent years, including 1 Saxon Place and more recently 6 Saxon Place.”
