A man who died in a crash on the A64 in York today was due in court charged with child sex abuse.
This afternoon, police named Scott Proudlock as the driver of a van who was fatally injured when it crashed into the back of a parked lorry on the road near York Racecourse.
The collision happened at about 2.50am this morning (Monday) on the eastbound carriageway.
The white Ford Transit Connect van collided with a stationary Volvo HGV which was parked in a lay-by at the side of the carriageway.
Mr Proudlock, 43, died at the scene. The crash led to the road being closed for several hours.
Later today, Mr Proudlock, from the Malton area, was due to appear in York Crown Court.
He was charged with three counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching; one of making an indecent image of a child; and one of possessing a prohibited image of a child.
The court today was told that it was the understanding of the police and the defence that the defendant was deceased.
The judge then adjourned the case for six weeks for enquiries to be made as this will need to be formalised with an official death certificate.
