The man is reported to have followed her briefly before he attempted to hand her a rose and spoke to her in a foreign language.
No physical contact was made and the girl was able to leave the area safely.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: It is unknown what language he spoke. The girl went home and did the right thing in telling her parents what had happened who reported it to the police.
“We understand the man may have approached other members of the public.
“Please get in touch if you witnessed the incident or have been approached in a similar manner and have not yet contacted us.
“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace the man, but in the meantime, parents should reinforce the advice to children not to engage with anyone they don’t know who tries to approach them.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash‑cam or CCTV footage, or who may have seen a black Mercedes‑Benz SLK acting suspiciously in the area around this time is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.
