A man has appeared in court today (Monday) charged with arson after a fire at a house in York.

Firefighters were called to the fire on Farrar Street, off Lawrence Street, on Saturday afternoon (5 March).

After putting out the blaze, they contacted York police.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “At 4pm on Saturday 5 March, North Yorkshire Police received a call from the fire service in relation to a house fire on Farrar Street, York.

“A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and was charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.”

Neighbours reported hearing a series of loud bangs, then saw police crime scene investigation vans in the street.

Benjamin Michael Sheard appeared at York Magistrates’ Court today charged with the offence.

He didn’t enter a plea and has been remanded in custody until an appearance at York Crown Court on April 4.
