Indie York launches new map ahead of major anniversary – with over 260 businesses featured

Indie York has launched its latest edition of its independent business map – ahead of its major anniversary and introducing a new charity spotlight feature.

The 11th edition of the map marks a major milestone ahead of the organisation’s 10th anniversary in January 2026.

The new map features more than 260 independent businesses, making it the largest edition ever produced, and a testament to York’s thriving independent scene and community.

Founded in 2016 by a small group of passionate business owners, and spearheaded by Johnny Hayes, Indie York began as a grassroots effort to champion the city’s diverse and vibrant independent sector.

Over the past decade, Indie York, which is a not-for-profit run association, has brought the independent community closer together, supported local entrepreneurs, and promoted the unique character that independent businesses bring to the city.

This year’s map introduces a new addition: a free charity spotlight, designed to highlight and support a York-based charitable organisation each year.

Members of the public were invited to nominate charities, and after reviewing the nominations, the Indie York committee selected York Against Cancer as the inaugural featured charity for 2025/26.

Charlotte Watson, who became chair of Indie York earlier this year, said: “We’re incredibly proud to unveil the biggest Indie York map yet.

“With more than 260 brilliant independents, this year’s edition reflects the strength, creativity, and resilience of York’s independent community. As we approach our 10th anniversary, it feels especially meaningful to introduce a new charity spotlight, giving us a way to celebrate and support the organisations that do so much for our city.

“We’re delighted to have York Against Cancer as our first featured charity and look forward to continuing this initiative in the years to come.”

York Against Cancer is an independent charity helping people in York, North and East Yorkshire affected by cancer. It provides care and support for patients and their families, fund pioneering cancer research and provides cancer awareness education and information.

Charlotte Wainwright, from York Against Cancer, said; “We’re delighted to have been selected as Indie York’s featured Charity for 2025/26.

“We have two wonderful gift shops located at York Hospital and York Community Stadium, which sell a beautiful selection of cards and gifts. All of our stock is brand new and thoughtfully chosen by our Retail Manager, with 100% of profits going to York Against Cancer. Every purchase made helps us support cancer patients and their loved ones across the region.”

The 11th edition of the Indie York map is available free of charge at participating businesses across the city, the Visit York Information Centre and hotels. Alongside the printed map, an interactive digital version is available to help users discover new favourites and explore York’s independent landscape.
