Read School Pupils Visit YorkMix Studios to Record Comic Relief Charity Song
There was a real buzz at the YorkMix Radio studios this week as pupils from Read School paid us a special visit to record a charity single in support of Comic Relief.
The children, aged between just four and fourteen, spent the morning experiencing life inside a working radio station. During their visit they joined the live Breakfast Club, enjoyed a tour of the studios, learned more about how live radio works and even stepped behind the microphone themselves to record a very special song.
The track they recorded is I Love My Life, chosen for its uplifting message of resilience, positivity and hope.

Amy Wilson from Read School explained that the project has grown from the school’s wider focus on kindness and empathy.
“This project has grown out of our work with the children around kindness, empathy and what it means to be a good friend. We have been encouraging them to think beyond themselves and understand how small actions can make a positive difference to others.”
The idea of recording a charity single felt like a meaningful way for the children to use their voices to help others.
“Recording a charity single felt like a meaningful way for the children to use their voices to support Comic Relief, whose work makes a real difference both locally and nationally by supporting people and communities who need help at different points in their lives.”
Music is a big part of school life at Read School, and the project brought together pupils from across the entire school community.
“Our children love to sing and we have involved our youngest children as well as some of the older children in school too – so it is a collaboration of children aged between 4–14.”
The single features 14-year-old Gabriel as lead vocalist.
“Gabriel is our lead singer and his voice is unbelievable and very individual for a 14-year-old. It will give you goosebumps!”

The choice of song reflects the message the children wanted to share.
“We chose I Love My Life because it carries a strong, positive message about resilience, self-belief and finding hope even in challenging times. It reflects the importance of staying strong, supporting one another and spreading optimism – values that link closely with Comic Relief’s work and with what the children have been learning in school.”
Through the project, the pupils hope to raise both awareness and funds for Comic Relief while spreading an important message about kindness, friendship and caring for others.

Everyone at YorkMix thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the pupils into the studio and seeing their enthusiasm for radio, music and the cause they are supporting. It was a fantastic morning filled with energy, learning and plenty of singing, and we’re delighted to now be able to share the finished track with you.
