Nothing gets people more in the spooky feels than watching a scary movie. This Halloween cinemas across York are screening throwbacks of classic horror films, many of which are celebrating important anniversaries.
Our friends at Everyman York are showing three classic throwbacks horrors to get the season in full swing.

Everyman York
Starting off with Alfred Hitchcocks classic horror Psycho (1960) playing on the 12th at 8pm and 14th at 8:15pm.
For those who have manged to go a whopping 65 years without seeing this horror masterpiece, perhaps this is your chance.
Th plot follows Marion crane who is on the run after a $40,000 theft from her employer, she then seeks refuge at the bates motel. To her dismay she meets Norman Bates, the proprietor, who has an interest in taxidermy. The story unravels from there.
On the 19th and 21st October at 6pm, the Disney classic Hocus Pocus (1993) will be showing in hopes to scare a new generation.
Hocus Pocus centres around a coven of evil witches who are accidentally freed by teenagers. With help from a magical cat, the teens mut steal the witches’ book of spells to prevent the witches’ immortality.
Scream (1996) the first on the monumental horror franchise is showing 26th and 28th October at 8:30pm.
Their lives became a real-life horror movie. After a small town faces a string of mysterious deaths, a friendship group become the target of a masked killer.
City Screen Picturehouse
Nosferatu (1922) X Radiohead is showing at city screen York 12th October.
The pinnacle of silent horror, F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu is being paired with Radiohead’s Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001) albums. The haunting picture surrounds Graf Orlock a vampire character, adapted without permission from Bram Stokers Dracula book (1897). The combination of the unnerving vampire and Radiohead’s compelling ballads is sure to start Halloween right.
Alien (1979) Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror that kicked off a franchise, is at city screen 19th October at 7:50pm.
The crew of a spaceship The Nostromo have to face alien creatures with a motive to kill everyone on board, including star Ellen Ripley played by Sigourney weaver. With genre defining special effects that became iconic cinema moments, Alien will leave nothing to the imagination this Halloween, when its back on the big screen.
The Thing (1982) another prime alien genre film, showing 26th October at 5pm.
When an alien that has been buried in the snow for over 10,000 years is discovered by a 12-man research team, things take a sinister turn. After horrific events the team must decide who is killer among them.
City screen will also be showing Psycho (1960) 30th October at 7:50pm
Perfect for your Halloween eve.
Vue York
Perfect Blue (1997) will show for one night only 13th October at 8pm.
This animated Japanese psychosocial thriller/horror follows a retired pop singer whose world is shaken when she begins to be stalked by an obsessive fan. The film will be subtitled for the screening.
Hocus Pocus (1993) will also be showing at Vue York on 18th October at 15:30pm.
Cineworld York
Cineworld is hosting what ‘Halloween season’ showing horror films that are celebrating anniversaries.
The Fog (1980) marking its 45th anniversary, is being screened 13th October at 7:30pm.
When celebrations of a town’s centaury are about to commence, the people of Antonio Bay start to notice a mysterious iridescent fog consuming the town. As the fog thickens, more people start to die.
Adapted from the book of the same title by James Herbert, The Fog is a spine-chilling horror that is well worth the watch.
Also celebrating an anniversary, Constantine (2005) turns 20 years old. Showing at Cineworld 18th October at 7:30pm.
Starring Keanu Reeves, this action/horror surrounds a demon hunter, Constantine, who is approached by detective Angela and asked to help her investigate the death of her twin. Upon digging, Constantine discovers that the human world is being infiltrated by demons.
The Descent (2005) showing 24th October at 7:30pm, is also having its 20th anniversary.
Trapped inside a cave and being hunted by predators, bloodthirsting and persistent. A friend groups expedition soon turns sinister after an accident leading to their entrapment.
Nightmare on elm street 2: Freddy’s revenge (1985) turns 40! You can catch it 29th October at 7:30pm.
The sequel to the horror iconic picture. A teenage boy is haunted in his dreams by supernatural child killer Freddy Krueger. The deceased killer is determined to possess the boy and continue his reign of terror.
Finally, to round up Halloween, Cineworld is keeping horror fans on their toes. A ‘Secret screaming’ showing on 31st October at 7:30.
With no clues about what the film will be, this screening will be a true test of who really loves horror. The film playing will be revealed after tickets have already been bought and viewers are in the seats!
