Here’s what to expect from North Yorkshire’s new food festival this weekend

The final preparations are underway for North Yorkshire’s newest free food festival.

Ovens around North Yorkshire are heating up as some of the finest food producers prepare to descend on Galtres Park (formerly Pickering Showground) this weekend for the exciting new food festival, Flavours of Yorkshire.

Taking place from Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 July, the event is being headlined by top TV chef, James Martin.

He marks his return to North Yorkshire with three cookery demonstrations on the Saturday.

On Sunday, chefs including Gilly Robinson of The Cook’s Place, Oli Farrar from Forty Six, Richie Stamp-Mason from Tofoo & Co, Kathryn Bumby from The Yorkshire Pasta Company and master pâtissier, Florian Poirot will demonstrate their incredible skills in free presentations on the main stage.

“This is a festival for everybody – with free admission and free car parking – and though food is our major focus, there’s so much more to see and do,” said event organiser Mark Brayshaw of Rockin’ Horse Promotions, who previously organised Malton’s Food Lovers Festivals.

“We’ve got an inflatable fun zone for children, a chance to meet birds of prey and the RSPB’s larger-than-life puffin; live entertainment throughout the weekend, and the British Grand Prix playing on the big screen in the bar.”

The event will also host Electric Avenue, a gathering of family-friendly electric vehicles – a fantastic way for anyone interested in buying an electric car or ebike to browse the environment-friendly offerings from key brands including Kia, Vauxhall, Volvo, Toyota and Chery all in one place.

Many local producers, including Yorkshire Pasta, Heck!, Gourmet Scotch Eggs, Spicy Monkey and Ros Grime Shellfish will be displaying their wares to take away, whilst a wide variety of street foods, from hot dogs to noodles, barbecue to fresh strawberries will be available to help create the perfect picnic.

Yorkshire’s top drinks producers attending include Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery (Filey Bay Whisky), Rhucello, Orchards of Husthwaite, Twisted Roots Rum Distillery and Yorkshire Dales Brewery.

The Whole Hog Barbecue competition, sponsored by Cranswick, Yorkshire Baker and Weber, will also take place across the weekend, with amateur BBQ enthusiasts competing in a series of challenges across the weekend.

“All we ask is that you arrive hungry – and we’re pretty sure you’ll leave with full bellies and a smile on your face,” said Mark.

The event runs from 10am to 6pm on Saturday 4 July and 10am to 5pm on Sunday 5 July. Admission and car parking is free.
