Following a recent inspection, a spokesperson from North Yorkshire Council says they have taken the difficult decision to introduce an emergency closure of the Grosmont Suspension Bridge.
Contractors found structural issues on the underside of the bridge that have rapidly deteriorated since its last inspection and are now affecting the support it provides.
North Yorkshire Council says: “We appreciate the impact this will have on the community, so we are urgently exploring options to install a temporary footbridge and will provide updates as soon as possible.”
The bridge runs alongside the North Yorkshire Moors Railway providing access over the Murk Esk to the steam sheds.
