Four North Yorkshire pubs listed among the best in Britain 2025

The best pubs in Britain have been announced – and four are in North Yorkshire.

The Good Food Guide’s 100 Best Pubs has just been published.

Editor of The Good Food Guide Chloë Hamilton said: “We went searching for the pubs that nail the drinking and dining side of the equation.”

Interestingly, their number one pub of the year is in Leeds – the Highland Laddie, which only reopened this year.

So which are the North Yorkshire selections?

Run by star chef Tommy Banks, the Abbey Inn prides itself as being a cosy country pub, with menus curated with a combination of local family farm ingredients and trusted independent suppliers.

Last November, the Abbey Inn made it into the Good Food Guide’s Best Sunday Roast 2024. Ranked 8.

The Star makes the list three years after its near miraculous back-from-the-brink reopening. The famous thatched pub, run by acclaimed chef Andrew Pern, was nearly destroyed by fire in 2021.

With a Michelin star it is highly rated on TripAdvisor. One review said: “The food was wonderfully tasty, well presented and exceptional value for money – all served by friendly and knowledgeable staff.” Ranked 34.

Another pub with Tommy Banks as a guiding force. He launched a new pub-focused hospitality group earlier this year – with this historic coaching inn its first purchase.

Jeopardy Hospitality is a partnership between Tommy, his business partner Matthew Lockwood, his brother James Banks and businessman Neil Armstrong. One recent TripAdvisor review for the General Tarleton said: “Could not fault it – amazingly food and service to match.” Ranked 44.

This lovely pub near Helmsley in the North York Moors was formerly a Drovers’ Inn dating back to the 19th century. It was reopened in 2023 by Yorkshire-born chef Sam Varley and his team.

A recent TripAdvisor review reads: “The food is excellent and I recommend a window seat in the dining room. Great service and a lovely atmosphere. Well worth checking out, especially the cheese.” Ranked 44.

Also not far from York is the East Yorkshire favourite The Pipe and Glass, which is ranked at 25.
