‘A worrying trend’ – Youths start three fires in York overnight

Firefighters were called to three fires started by youths in York last night (Sunday).

It comes hours after a large blaze on fields in York came close to people’s homes.

And a York councillor has told YorkMix that the fire-setting is a “concerning turn of events”.

Crews from Acomb were first called to fires started by youths off Foxwood Lane at 6.25pm.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “On arrival the crew located three separate seats of fire to grass that they extinguished using buckets of water and beaters.  Police were informed due to deliberate nature of fire starting.”

Then at 7.29pm, a York crew went to reports of youths setting fires in a park off  Thanet Road.

“Crews located a fire to approximately six square metres of grassland and extinguished it using one hose reel jet.”

Again police were informed.

A few minutes later, at 7.46am, York firefighters went to a fire started by youths in the park on Bellhouse Way.

When they arrived it was already extinguished. It comes after a deliberate fire started here on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking after the large fire on fields between Askham Lane and Alness Drive in Acomb yesterday, Dringhouses and Woodthorpe councillor Stephen Fenton told YorkMix: “There was a similar fire yesterday, not too far away in Foxwood Park, which I think was deliberately set.

“So, if if this fire again has been a deliberate act, it does indicate a worrying trend.

“If there are some individuals who think it’s fun to set fires, I don’t think they quite appreciate the potentially fatal effect that they can have if if a fire catches hold and it leaps from a field into the neighbouring residential properties, which it could do quite easily.

“So it’s a concerning turn of events given how tinder dry the ground is at the moment.”
