Flood warnings issued as bus service diverted by rising waters

There are a number of flood warnings in place across York and North Yorkshire today.

Recent heavy rain has led to rising levels on several of the county’s rivers.

There are also several flood alerts in place.

The River Ouse in York is forecast to peak at 3.76m at 1am tomorrow (Saturday, 24 January). The top of the normal range is 1.9m.

Due to high river levels, Rowntree Park in York is closed this morning, pending a review. The York Explore cafe remains open and accessible from Richardson Street. Away from the riverside, York is open for business as normal.

More rain is forecast for today and most of next week.

The flood warnings – which mean flooding is expected – are below.

River Ouse at York – riverside properties: Locations most affected will be the properties on King’s Staith in York and riverside areas through York from Lendall Bridge to Millennium Bridge. We are currently operating flood gates and the Foss Barrier. 

River Ouse at York – St George’s Field and Queen’s Staith: Locations most affected will be properties along Queen’s Staith, on South Esplanade, Friars Terrace and Tower Place. St George’s Field carpark and Rowntree Park. 

River Ouse at Naburn Lock: Locations most affected will be Naburn Lock Buildings and Lock Cottages. 

River Ure at Boroughbridge Camping and Caravanning Site: Locations most affected will be Boroughbridge Camping and Caravanning Site. 

River Nidd at Hunsingore: The Old Cornmill at Hunsingore.

Floodwater will be affecting some roads. This morning the York Pullman Bus Company said this: “Due to flooding around The Ship Inn in Acaster Malbis, the My21 bus will be unable to pick up or drop off at the usual Ship Inn stop.

“Please instead use the Memorial Institute stop.”
