First look: Village pub reopens as a ‘proper local’ after being closed for months

A well-known village pub is back open after months of closure, aiming to be a “proper local”.

The Oddd Fellows Arms in Carlton near Selby is celebrating with a weekend of events.

After closing before Christmas 2025, the much-loved inn is ready welcomed customers back yesterday.

Owners Marta and Nik, alongside their one-year-old daughter Athena, hoping to create a true community hub.

The couple, who have spent years working in the hospitality industry, say they knew The Oddd Fellows Arms was the right place the moment they walked through the door.

“We’re all about good food, proper drinks, a good laugh, and creating a pub where everyone feels at home. Whether you’re popping in for one pint, a family meal or just a natter, you’ll always be welcome,” Marta said.

Little Athena, already affectionately described as the pub’s “toughest manager”, has been keeping mum and dad on their toes while they prepared for today’s opening.

The family say they’re passionate about becoming part of village life and are inviting residents to pop in for a chat whenever they see them hard at work around the pub.

Own lager

Under the new team, the Oddd Fellows Arms serves up a range of homemade food.

The opening menu features traditional pub favourites alongside modern classics, including steak and ale pie, rump steak, beer battered haddock and wild mushroom risotto.

Drinks include its very own Oddd Fellows Lager, brewed especially for the pub, as well as beers from Selby’s Jolly Sailor Brewery.

It shows the sport on big screens, there’s a pool table and a large beer garden.

The pub opened yesterday (Saturday). The celebrations continue today with live music from One Track Mind from 6pm, followed by the World Cup Final shown live on the pub’s big screens.

The Old York Tea Room has also wished the new owners well, revealing that some of its homemade cakes will be available at the pub during the opening weekend.

For Marta and Nik, however, the biggest goal isn’t simply reopening a pub—it’s bringing back a place where the community can come together.

Nik said: “We can’t wait to meet you all and make The Oddd Fellows Arms a proper local again.”
