Video and pix: Thousands of ecstatic fans greet York City on champions parade

What a street party that was!

Thousands of fans lined the streets to cheer on the York City heroes as they took a lap of honour around the city.

From St Leonards Place to the Eye of York, people cheered, filmed, chanted and waved – and the players, owners, manager and staff did the same!

It was a fitting tribute to a record-breaking season which saw City crowned champions of the National League in the last seconds of the last match.

Back in the Football League for the first time in ten years, co-owner Julie-Anne Uggla and her son Matt have big plans. Julie-Anne said: “Watch this space!”

She told the crowds at the Eye of York: “When I asked Matthew why York City, he said it’s a sleeping giant and we can take it where York wants to go – and he was right.

“As we always say to you guys, this is just the beginning.”

The City team then went to The Dubliner on Tanner’s Moat to keep the party going.

Lord Mayor of York Martin Rowley said: “We are going up! I thank Julie-Anne, Matthew and the team for all they’ve done for this city.

“If you look at the most priceless sculpture, it is born of a thousand knocks and a thousand chips. And York City are priceless marble.”

Julie-Anne then told fans: “Stick with us, because we’re doing it again next season!”
