Empty York shop to be brought back to life as retailer moves in

Plans to expand a budget retailer into the home of a vacant shop in a York suburb have been approved.

Savers in Acomb’s Front Street is set to take over the neighbouring Ordsal House which was previously home to Farmfoods.

A planning application from Savers owners Superdrug stated the develpment would improve the appearance of the building while respecting its surroundings.

City of York Council planning officers stated it would uphold the general character of the area.

The expansion follows the closure of the Front Street Farmfoods in December 2024.

It is set to see the shopfront redecorated, an outside staircase installed at the back of the building and roller shutters fitted.

Savers branding including signs will be installed at the front of the shop.

Plans stated metal stairs would replace concerete ones at the rear which are no longer fit for purpose to improve access.

The application fixtures and fittings inside the shop would be rearranged but the layout was otherwise remain largely unchanged.

Also also stated modern additions would be in keeping with the unit which was built in the 1970s.

In a report on the plans, council officers stated: “The use of the building will remain as a shop therefore it is not anticipated there will be any additional noise and comings and goings.”
