New podcast about James Herriot launched to meet huge demand around the world

A new podcast series about Yorkshire vet and author James Herriot has been announced.

The Real James Herriot Podcast will feature James Herriot’s son, Jim Wight, his daughter Rosie Page and former veterinary colleague Peter Wright who now appears in the Yorkshire Vet TV series.

It is being launched to coincide with the launch of the sixth season of All Creatures Great and Small in North America this January to help “satisfy the exponential growth in demand for all things James Herriot”.

Alf Wight, the real James Herriot, became internationally famous following the success of his stories about life as a North Yorkshire Vet in the 1940s.

First published in 1971 the books sold over 60 million copies world-wide before becoming even more popular with the BBC All Creatures Great and Small TV series between 1978 and 1990 and more recently, since 2020 when the Channel 5 series remake launched.

Jim Wight published his biography of his father, The Real James Herriot, in October 1999 with real-life stories and anecdotes about Alf and the inside story of the man and the people around him that helped to create his stories.

“The idea of the podcasts came up when discussing Jim’s book when we launched the Original James Herriot Tour of Thirsk in summer 2025,” said World of James Herriot marketing director John Gallery.

“Jim and Rosie helped to create the tour and during its preparation many new anecdotes emerged.

“Jim agreed to share more memories of his father for the podcast as did Rosie and Peter Wright and we are all very excited to be able to share this with all James Herriot fans around the world.”

A unique experience, World of James Herriot visitor numbers have been escalating rapidly and are at an all-time high. Based in his original surgery at 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, North Yorkshire – the ‘Skeldale House’ of the Herriot books – it takes visitors on a journey back to the 1940s.

With over 40% of guests coming from overseas, the podcast will help to fill a gap for the millions of fans around the world who want to hear the authentic stories of the Real James Herriot.
