Fire crews tackled a large compost heap fire in York last night.
Acomb and York firefighters were called to Tinker Lane, Rufforth, at 8.50pm.
That’s the road which includes the Harewood Whin Waste Transfer Station.

A compost heap measuring 40m by 15m was well alight on a commercial site.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews set up a ground monitor and used main jets to protect nearby heaps that were at risk of catching fire due to heavy winds in the area.
“The incident was handed over to on site staff who will continue to monitor the heap through the night and a revisit will be conducted during daylight hours by Acomb fire crew.”
