People were nearly cut off by the tide in Robin Hood’s Bay this weekend.
And the incident has led to coastguard officers issuing a warning to all those going to the coast.
In a post on Facebook yesterday, Whitby Coastguard wrote: “Earlier today, concerns were raised about people on the beach at Robin Hood’s Bay who were becoming cut off by the tide.
“Thankfully, we were alerted and ready to respond, and the situation resolved without the need for further action.
“But we do need to address something important… Posting on social media is not the way to report an incident.
If you are worried about someone’s safety on the coast — call 999 and ask for the coastguard immediately.
“Time matters. Waiting, watching, or posting online can delay the help that may be needed.”
They added: “Assessing risk from a Facebook photo, especially at a distance, is not something to joke about.
“These are real coastal conditions. Tides, terrain and access points are constantly changing, cliffs and banks continually collapsing. What may look ‘fine’ from one angle or moment in time can very quickly become dangerous.
“Not long ago, we attended an incident in this exact location where a casualty sustained a broken ankle at high tide. What started as ‘just being cut off’ quickly became a serious and complex evacuation — and a genuinely life-threatening situation.”
