Beloved York burger restaurant to close and relocate to city centre

A popular burger restaurant has announced it’s closing – but that it will be relocating and reopening soon back in the centre of York.

Sloppy’s Bar and Kitchen in Woodthorpe, revealed last week on social media that their last day of service at that location will be Thursday 25 June.

But, this isn’t the end of Sloppy’s, as the restaurant will be relocating back into York and will reopen its new restaurant in late July.

The exact location of the new premises has yet to be announced, but the social media post reports to ‘keep an eye out for updates and the big reveal’.

The bar and restaurant specialises in burgers, small plates, loaded fries, craft beer, and cocktails.

Co-founders Molly and Leon

Co-founded by partners Molly McGrath and Leon Sledmore, Sloppy’s first started as a kiosk in York city centre in 2018 as ‘Sloppy’s Burgers’ and ‘Nine Bar’.

From there, the burgers grew in popularity and Sloppy’s moved into pub kitchens such as Inn on the Green in Acomb and The Lighthorseman on Fulford Road.

It then opened its first permanent location at Acomb Wood Shopping Centre in Woodthorpe, in November 2022, where it became a beloved staple for regulars.

Now, Molly and Leon are preparing to move Sloppy’s back into the city centre.

“An exciting opportunity came up for us to relocate,” explained Molly and Leon. “It’s something we’d wanted to do anyway, it just cropped up a bit sooner than expected.

“Getting back into the centre will hopefully allow us to grow the business, and become accessible to even more customers. We mainly hope for more footfall and busier services to really show everyone how much we’ve progressed over the years.”

Though the move is an exciting prospect, Molly and Leon want to celebrate the years spent at their Woodthorpe venue, their first bricks-and-mortar restaurant.

“We will hold so many great memories of our Woodthorpe restaurant close to our hearts,” said Molly. “From New Year’s Eve parties, live music, birthdays, movie nights, open mic nights, a wedding reception, and of course our wonderful quiz nights!

“Special mention to our excellent quiz masters, Poppy, Matt and of course our behind the scenes quiz extraordinaire, Sara. Also to Simon, for all the incredible live music, thank you. We couldn’t have done it without you guys!

“We’ve had a lot of fun over the years and have loved being neighbours to such brilliant independent businesses, Buongiorno, Bengal Lounge & Silver Pearl. And to all of our lovely regulars, (you know who you are) we will honestly miss you all so much.

“See you in the city!”
