Agony for York City as last gasp Rochdale goal denies them promotion

York City came within seconds of automatic promotion – only to have it snatched away today.

Playing with confidence and verve, City eased to a 3-0 victory over Yeovil Town at the LNER Community Stadium this evening.

Goals from Ollie Pearce, Josh Stones and Joe Grey helped City to a fifth win in a row in front of a sell-out crowd.

If Rochdale failed to win on their trip to Braintree, it meant City would be champions.

With City’s game over and Rochdale drawing 1-1, players milled on the pitch awaiting the Braintree final whistle.

It felt like York had at least one hand on the National League trophy.

Instead, Rochdale poured cold water on the celebrations with a winner in the ninth minute of added time.

It means City must travel to Rochdale for the game that decides who is crowned champions of the National League – and gets the only automatic promotion spot back into the football league.

City only need to draw that match to take top spot. Rochdale must win.
