Three fire crews, police, ambulance and the coastguard were mobilised last night after reports of a person entering the water from Whitby bridge.
The alert went out at 7.40pm, and firefighters from Whitby, Lythe and Robin Hoods Bay were called to the scene.
But it turned out to be a false alarm.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “After downstream bank searches were conducted by fire crews, nobody was located in the water.
“They were later found by police after returning to the bridge they abseiled from to collect their equipment.
“The person was safe and well and the incident was left with police.”
