‘A very high number of violent incidents’ in York city centre overnight

Police said they dealt with ‘a very high number of violent incidents’ in York city centre last night (Saturday).

The end of the first Saturday since restrictions were lifted, after a day which saw 30,000 attend the races, added up to a challenging night shift for officers.

Special Constable Williscroft said on Twitter: “Unfortunately a very high number of violent incidents. Please stay safe everyone.”

Among the more minor incidents reported overnight included a women stealing a sign off the door of a bar in Stonegate.

And the White Horse on Bootham reported that a group of five men, one of whom was sick inside the pub, got aggressive when told to leave.

One of the group then threatened door staff on the way out.
