York shop and tearoom to close after 24 years as food prices rocket

A popular York café is set to close next week.

Clifton Catering, found at the junction of Cliton and Avenue Terrace, will shut on Thursday (2 April).

It has been trading for 24 years.

In a post on Facebook, the owners Dave and Heidi said: “The decision is for personal and economic reasons.

“Economically, many people are now working from home. There are certainly less people working regularly in the local area.

“This also reduces footfall walk-in business. Home delivery companies also has a big effect. But not something we wanted to start, feeling both quality on delivery and price are hugely affected.

“Food costs as we all know have risen over 40% in the last five years. This is much easier to control with outside catering than it is within the shop and tearoom, where customer numbers vary so much on a daily basis within the shop.”

Clifton Catering will continue to provide catering for business events, parties, anniversaries, birthdays, weddings and more.

“We certainly hope to provide catering for business and family events in York for many years to come,” they said.

“But for now, we would like to thank all our customers who have supported us for so many years. We really have met some fantastic, interesting and lovely people over the years.”

Customers queued up to thank Dave and Heidi. One said: “You have always provided the most exceptional food and lovely service.

“So friendly, warm and genuine. Plus your breakfasts, bacon and egg sandwiches, cakes and pasta salad are amazing and some of my favourites.”

“Oh no!! Totally understand the reasons why (it’s such a tough time for small, brilliant businesses) but… please do know that you will be so missed,” another commented.
